ABOUT THE CLIENT

MOORABOOL WIND FARM CONSISTS OF 104 WIND TURBINES LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 27KM SOUTH EAST OF BALLARAT.

Moorabool Wind Farm consists of 104 wind turbines located approximately 27km south east of Ballarat.

The project is divided into two sections, North and South. The northern section of the farm includes 50 wind turbines, while the southern section includes 54. All turbines are 169m to the tip of the blade.

The Moorabool Wind Farm is connected to the National Electricity Grid via a 132kV overhead powerline. The powerline extends for approximately 30km, connecting the Moorabool North and Moorabool South Wind Farms to the existing Elaine terminal station, near the Elaine township.

Moorabool Wind Farm contains over 100 wind turbines. It produces up to 312 MW, approximately 1,050,000 MWh of electricity annually. This is enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 228,000 average Victorian homes every year, representing approximately 10% of Victorian homes.

THE SOLUTION

SBL SOLUTIONS HELD THE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION SCOPE OF WORKS ON THIS CONSTRUCTION PROJECT.

SBL Solutions held the Electrical Installation scope of works on this construction project which saw the cabling and connections of 104 Goldwind Wind Turbine Generators.

COMMUNITY

COMMITTED TO STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

Moorabool Wind Farm is committed to strengthening relationships with the local community. The project team keeps an open dialogue with the local residents, stakeholders and the wider community to ensure successful exchange of information, consultation and engagement.

Moorabool Wind Farm developed a Stakeholder and Community Engagement Plan. The program of consultation is ongoing and will continue through construction and operation phases of the wind farm.

TIMELINE

  1. October 2010 – Wind farm is approved.
  2. September 2016 – Moorabool Wind Farm sold to Goldwind Australia.
  3. July 2018 – Construction begins.
  4. Late 2020 – Partial operation commences.
  5. 2022 – Commissioning completed.

LOCATION

THE MOORABOOL WIND FARM PROJECT IS LOCATED APPROXIMATELY 5KM SOUTH OF BALLAN, APPROXIMATELY 67KM FROM MELBOURNE, 27KM FROM BALLARAT AND 47KM FROM GEELONG.

The Moorabool Wind Farm project is located approximately 5km south of Ballan, approximately 67km from Melbourne, 27km from Ballarat and 47km from Geelong.

The northern section or the ‘Bungeeltap’ section consists of 50 turbines, whereas the southern section or the ‘Ballpark section’ is home to 54 turbines.

Both Moorabool North and South wind farms have one onsite substation each.

BENEFITS

THE PROJECT HAS HAD SIGNIFICANT LOCAL BENEFITS DURING CONSTRUCTION, WITH INVESTMENT IN THE LOCAL ECONOMY.

COMMUNITY FUND

Each year, financial support is also provided for projects that will provide lasting benefits to the local community. The aim of the fund is to give back to the community, promote positive and long term results, promote sustainability, strengthen connections within the community and encourage social wellbeing.

To date, Moorabool Wind Farm has invested more than $450,000 in the local community through its community funding, local sponsorships and community partnerships.

ENVIRONMENT

THE PROJECT IS LOCATED WITHIN AN AGRICULTURAL DISTRICT, WITH THE MAJORITY OF THE SITE BEING USED LARGELY FOR GRAZING AND CROPPING.

Extensive surveys and assessments have been undertaken to assess the potential impact of the wind farm and related infrastructure on the environment.

Additionally, the project complies with development approval conditions including the implementation of Environmental Management Plans, Native Vegetation Offset Management Plans, Bat and Avifauna Management Plan, Conservation Management Plans etc.
